For a relatively short period of my adolescent, I grew up on a farm. Among the goats and chickens, near the center of the property, there stood a great mulberry tree. During the early summer dark berries would form by the hundred on the tree, yet out of reach to us short children. Soon we had made a makeshift ladder up the tree where we could climb, perch, and feast on the juicy fruit. It left great stains of its dark purple nectar on the ground and I assume all over myself.

While it has been many years since I have been back to that mulberry tree, every time I do pass one it brings me back to the fond memories. Not to mention the berries really are delicious.

Moving to NYC with its sparse density of trees had me believe that my days of foraging and munching berries were behind me. But to my surprise earlier this spring I had found bunches of mulberry trees scattered around the city. This lead me to put together a map of all known mulberry trees in and around NYC. Today there are more than 5 thousand, many being adolescent trees still making their way towards fruit bearing.

I do have great care for these yummy trees, and its where you can expect to find me in the late spring. You can also visit, and care for these trees around the city.
